Respecting the needs of the people and finding solutions
to preserve our traditions while moving forward.

• Ockawamick:

  Buying a building for $1.5 million that needs over $15 million worth of work, without a well thought out plan of use, and seemingly without all the information or having all the key stakeholders on board, is foolish. A more inclusive public comment and stakeholder process is imperative on all major County decisions and can stop this kind of wasteful spending.

• Pine Haven:

  Moving Pine Haven out of Philmont would have had a devastating effect on our community. Not only are there 150 well-paid employees who are Claverack consumers, but Pine Haven supports Philmont's sewer debt and is an extension of our homes and hearts. It is imperative that we remain vigilant as the county continues to make decisions about Pine Haven to ensure that the needs of our community, our county and our taxpayers are met.

• Small Business Development:

  A multi-pronged approach is needed to do everything we can to support smart business development.

Supporting the new zoning as identified in the town's Comprehensive Plan

Actively promoting Claverack for businesses

Identifying barriers, and resolving them

Asking current businesses how to support their growth

Taking advantage of the location of the County Commerce Park in Claverack

Engaging county, state, or federal grant and other supportive programs

Creating an economic strategic plan

• Communication/Technology:

In general, there needs to be more open process, more communication and a better use of technology for the Town of Claverack to be more effective and efficient.

Actively use the town's website (and keep it updated)


Have regular workshop meetings for more informal public input


Create a Philmont Liaison role to encourage and facilitate town-village communication


Report regularly on county issues at town board meetings and other forums


Use current technology to engage more of the community


Post meeting notes immediately, even if in draft form

• Community Space:

  The Town of Claverack is one of the largest communities in the county, and yet we have no real community meeting space.
  A. B. Shaw Firehouse often generously donates use of their space, but they too need more room. They are just one of the community service buildings that are inadequate for their needs, while other buildings stand vacant or in disrepair. Creative and active solutions are needed to review how to address these needs. By working together, supporting each other and pursuing all available resources, the development of effective spaces will be a more reachable goal.
